Todas as criaturas pararam, petrificadas.
Chegara o grande dia! O dia do tão aguardado e atemorizante Armagedão!
2002
Carrego a fundo no acelerador.
Tentei acalmar-me. Olhei para o relógio, vi que eram 04:44. Bebi água e respirei fundo.
Passado pouco tempo, voltei a adormecer.
Estou dentro do automóvel, de pernas para o ar, continua a chover e as rodas a girar. Tento desprender-me e sair.
Recordei-me da minha pequena estrela tatuada no pé, ainda tão recente.
O quadrado simboliza a extensão limitada do mundo físico.
Quem é que me quererá vigiar?
- — Pois, eu sei, filha.
Achava tudo tão disparatado e havia sempre tanto mistério e meias palavras, que aquilo tirava-me do sério.
- — Adão? O da Bíblia?
- — Sim.
- — E Jesus, o Jesus?
- — Sim, Jesus Cristo.
- — Não me parece.
Prologue
An intense, deafening roar spread through the darkness. The land shook; it was hot and on the verge of tearing open. A few minutes passed before a storm charged with lightning and thunder illuminated the skies, completely drowning out the noise. The roaring faded away, overcome by that intense spectacle of light and terrifying sound. It seemed as though the heavens would break apart into large pieces.
All creatures stood still, petrified. They knew what this meant.
On the side of good, shining angels dressed in white waited calmly in silence, atop immaculate, lined-up horses, each in their respective positions. On the side of evil, dirty, emaciated demons, matching their dark horses, laughed nervously—writhing, growling, and spitting out sinuous taunts.
Before them, the impressive scarlet dragon prepared to breathe fire toward The Chosen One, who was caught between both sides, paralyzed with fear, clutching a baby in her arms.1
The Word was about to carry out the foretold cleansing.
The great day had come! The day of the long-awaited and nightmarish Armageddon!
2002
I accelerate in the left lane. It’s nighttime; a light rain and heavy fog make the air dense and suffocating. I crest a slope and begin the ascent, leaving a tunnel behind. Then I see it: a man, standing motionless in the middle of the road.
Hidden by the fog, he only appears when I’m already too close. The man, hooded, is looking down at an open book in his hands. He doesn’t move, nor does he look up. I slam on the brakes hard and swerve, veering away as fast as I can.
Startled by the situation and his total impassivity, I drive past, staring at him; he turns his head and meets my gaze with a strange, malicious look. For a fraction of a second, an image flashes in my mind—his hands on my chest, violently dragging me from the car with supernatural strength. I floor the accelerator. When I look back at the road, I see two cars parked on the right. At this speed, a collision would be fatal!
My racing heart jolted me awake.
I tried to calm myself down. I looked at the clock—04:44 a.m. … I drank some water and took a deep breath. Eventually, I fell back asleep.
I’m back in the car, but it’s upside down; it’s still raining, and the wheels are still spinning. I try to unbuckle the seatbelt in an attempt to get out. I notice the hooded man approaching me—I can only see his legs and feet. He walks slowly but steadily across the wet asphalt. I want to unbuckle and open the door, but I cannot—I’m stuck; the window is jammed and won’t budge. The man stops beside me, bends down, and stares at me. He smirks and makes a gesture with both hands—a triangle around his right eye while keeping the other closed.
I woke up with shivers running through my entire body. I felt every single hair standing on end.
The next day, I decided to look up the meaning of that hand gesture. Everything in that dream felt vivid, real, and it would not leave my mind—as opposed to so many other dreams vanishing within a few hours until I remembered nothing. Everything in that dream was black and white, colorless.
As I discovered, the triangle was supposedly a Christian symbol, with the earliest known examples appearing in Renaissance art—as in Pontormo’s “The Supper at Emaús,” painted in 1525—paired with the eye symbol, which is believed to have been added later.
For a long time, the triangle was a symbol of the Christian Holy Trinity—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. In the centuries before the Middle Ages, God was sometimes portrayed with a triangular halo.
In Christian iconography, the rays of light often shown emanating from the symbol are also a preexisting emblem of God’s light.
God had already been portrayed in many enigmatic ways before, but not as a strange, bodiless eye. A solitary eyeball carries its own psychological impact as a symbol of authority, suggesting an omnipresent watch.
I delved a bit further back in history, discovering that the solitary eye symbol first appeared in Egypt. One of the most famous examples is the Eye of Horus—a hybrid between a human eye and a falcon eye. In ancient Egyptian mythology, the god-king Horus, often depicted with a falcon’s head, had his eyes torn out in a battle against his uncle, Seth. Seth is portrayed as a violent deity, responsible for sandstorms, thunder, dark, heavy clouds, and an evil breath. An enemy of light. Egyptians believed eclipses were an act of Seth, who would tear out Horus’ right eye (the Sun) or left eye (the Moon). According to legend, Seth once tore out one of Horus’ eyes in battle, and Horus fought back, castrating Seth and leaving him sterile. There are many versions of the battle between Seth and Horus, which can take violent, grotesque turns.
The Eye of Horus was therefore considered a symbol of protection, often worn as an amulet; a piece small enough to carry in one’s pocket. Beyond protection, I also found that it’s now used as a symbol against envy and ill will, which is why it’s often seen in tattoos and pendants. I remembered the small star tattooed on my foot, still fresh. That pretty five-pointed star was my own symbol of divine shelter, a guide for my feet, a light that illuminated my path. I found it astonishing that a centuries-old symbol from such an ancient civilization could still resonate with so many people today. Some believe that the Eye of Horus represents the pineal gland in the brain, which produces melatonin. On the more mystical side, some even call it the “third eye,” suggesting it is responsible for connecting body and soul.
The triangle, on the other hand, has long been used in architecture, mathematical methods, and even in spiritual matters, representing ethics and rectitude as the key to science and wisdom, through which all of life’s mysteries could be solved. The pyramids of Egypt were built on triangular foundations. They were considered symbols of advancement and elevation, linked to the divine.
Speaking of buildings, I learned that Freemasonry, which also uses the eye symbol, originated in the Middle Ages of Europe as a guild of stonemasons! I had no idea. I had heard a little about this entity, but I did not know that. Out of curiosity, I kept digging. I read that it’s a philosophical, philanthropic, educational, and progressive institution. Although tied to spiritual beliefs, it’s not a religion in itself.
Modern Freemasonry was founded in England in 1717, when four lodges joined to form the Grand Lodge of London. In just over two decades, the movement had spread, and the institution became one of the three pillars of English society—alongside the Church and the Crown. After being implemented in France, it reached Portugal in 1727, brought by an English Catholic who founded the first lodge in Lisbon.
This order mandates that its members undergo a ritualistic, brotherly, and universal initiation ceremony that seeks to foster their spiritual and moral evolution, with the mission of helping build a fair and egalitarian society and contributing to the progress of humanity. The foundations of Freemasonry obedience are tolerance and freedom of thought.
Freemasons (originally a French term) had to keep their activities a secret after being persecuted for opposing the absolutist regime. Historically, with ties to academia and politics, Freemasonry lodges served as the stage for many conspiracies and have been accused of being an organization for the elite. The secret side was not tolerated by Salazar, who banned Freemasonry in Portugal in 1935.
Sometimes, Freemasonry would use the “Eye of Providence” as a symbol of the Great Architect, God. However, its widespread use did not come before the late 19th century. Inspired by the Freemasons, the Illuminati—of whom little is known—also used the symbol of an eye within a pyramid. I discovered that the group was a secret society that originated in Bavaria and lasted from 1776 to 1785. Over time, the group’s goals concentrated on influencing political decisions and changing institutions such as the monarchy and the church. Some Illuminatijoined the Freemasons to recruit new members. Joining the Illuminatirequired the full consent of other members, wealth, a good reputation, and a suitable family. There was also a hierarchical system, along with rituals, most of which remained unknown. To be accepted, newcomers had to promise to sacrifice personal interests for the greater good of society.
The “Eye of Providence” appears in churches worldwide, in Masonic buildings, and on the US one-dollar bill.
By 1782, the Illuminati had grown to around six hundred members, including German nobles such as Baron Adolph von Knigge, a former Freemason who helped shape the group’s structure and expansion. Initially, the only members were the students of Weishaupt, a canon law professor and the group’s founder, but soon doctors, lawyers, and intellectuals joined as well.
By 1784, it is estimated that the Illuminati had between two thousand and three thousand members.
Some time later, some followers of Discordianism sent fake letters to magazines, claiming that events such as the assassination of US President John F. Kennedy (1917–1963) had been the work of the Illuminati.
Freemasonry separates men and women into distinct temples, called lodges. In England, for instance, the first female lodge was founded in 1908, with a revered member of the male sex. Later, it became an all-female lodge, with a ban on male participation. These women are also banned from male ceremonies.
I realized that there are also alleged connections to Satanism and the idea of a New World Order, where a global elite group—composed of individuals of wealth, power, and influence—quietly governs the world, without most people noticing it. However, this relationship is unclear, and there is no concrete evidence to support this connection.
I was shocked by the allegations about Walt Disney being a Freemason and a key player in the New World Order, sending hidden and subliminal messages disguised through cartoons and influencing children’s behavior and consumption. Some can even see the number 666 camouflaged in his signature, along with the suggestion of a triangle in the castle symbol of his studio.
My grandmother once said that a man from her religion had spoken about a connection to spiritism and that children should not watch those movies. I didn’t give it a second thought. She always had odd beliefs that I associated more with her African roots and the rituals practiced there. She would also say that she was not afraid of anything and could speak with people inside the television, so …
However, from everything I have read, I understand that the symbol of the triangle and eye remains, even today, an obscure display or an obligation for those bound by it. They display it in covert and hidden ways to those who are unaware—like me, who would not have known if it had not been for the mysterious man in the dream. It seems that the organization is still alive and thriving. That may or may not explain the corruption we see in the world. But what do I have to do with this?
And was the time I woke up after my dream relevant in any way? I researched the number four and discovered that it is also associated with Freemasonry. It is the symbol of the occult force, the family number, and boils down to four verbs: knowing, wanting, daring, and silencing. Four was considered the perfect number because there are four sides to a square, four virtues, four elements (water, earth, fire, and air), four gospels, four letters in the name of God (YHWH), and four letters in the name of the first man, Adam. It is considered the most kabbalistic number.
Besides, there are four seasons in a year, four cardinal points, four stages of human life, the phases of the moon, and the four horsemen of the Apocalypse. The square symbolizes the limited extension of the physical world. For Pythagoreans, the number four, a solid figure, is the first perfect even square. The golden verses attributed to Pythagoras begin as, “Bless us four, divine number, creator of gods and men.”
It is the symbol of law and order. It is associated with orderly work for the masses, with diligence, and with the energy to build and realize. Producing requires strength and power. Four is the number of strong people, with good reasoning skills, and a fair, meticulous, and orderly nature.
My head is a mess after reading all of this. What could the book in the man’s hand mean? The fact that he stood in my way and did not dodge … The fact I woke up at that specific time, and returned to that same dream after falling back asleep … Only the car crash and rollover were omitted. They were so strong that I woke up. And what did he intend to say by making that gesture with the triangle around his eye, with me upside down, after an accident? Maybe he meant to say that he is watching me. The all-seeing eye, a controlling higher being. But, who? Who would want to watch me?
I went straight to my parents’ house and told my mom everything. I wanted to know if she knew anything about it and whether there was any possible connection to the man who gave me life. The answer she gave me was “no.”
She had heard about Freemasonry before, but she didn’t know much. She said Abdul had never spoken about that, the group, or the numbers before. He would sometimes say: “All things happen in their due time—the divine time.”
That drove me a little mad.
“But that doesn’t mean anything! That gets me nowhere,” I yelled, frustrated.
“Yes, I know, darling. But I can’t tell you anything else because I don’t know anything else. I’ve seen this symbol on the one-dollar bill, but to be honest, I never paid much attention to it and was never curious enough to look it up. One colleague once told me that each bill is 6.66 cm high, but I never checked this, so I don’t know whether that’s true or not.”
“Curious …”
“I mean, I probably do dream sometimes, but I just don’t remember it. Ever since I had your siblings, with all those sleepless nights and ha ving to wake up early every day, I sleep like a rock in the little time I get. I used to dream a lot when I was younger.”
“So, you don’t think there’s any special meaning?”
“I didn’t say that. I don’t know … Maybe there is, maybe there isn’t. And I don’t know whether that’s related or not, but ever since you were born, your father, Abdul, said that you were The Chosen One.”
“Chosen for what?”
“I don’t know; he never told me. He would say that sentence, that everything has its due time—the divine time. But it may be just the meaning, the literal translation of your surname …”
“And when is that due time?”
“I don’t know, Julie. He said that, when the timing was right, he would reach out. Maybe it was just a story or a legend about his ancestors. He would say his family’s bloodline was … Well, I can’t remember, but they were chosen or special. They were the descendants of Jesus, I guess, or Adam, I’m not sure. Everything sounded so crazy and vague, and there was always so much mystery that I was going insane.”
“Adam? The one from the Bible?”
“Yes.”
“And Jesus, as in, the Jesus?”
“Yes, Jesus Christ. But I believe he told me this bloodline did not
appear in the Holy Book. It was all a secret …”
“That does sound crazy! These stories are thousands of years old. How would he know this? If any of that were true, of course.”
“Well, I don’t know. I never gave any of it a second thought, especially since whenever I asked about it, he wouldn’t tell me. He would change the subject, which made me angry.”
“This dream I had was disturbing and not like the others. I want to figure out who is watching me. Could it be him?”
“Maybe. He has always been a mysterious man, and it has seemed to me that he knows some things about you, so it’s possible.”
“Why do you say this? What did he say?” I interrupted.
“Nothing special. It’s just a feeling I have. There were times when I felt like I was being watched, like I could feel his presence … But I never saw him. That’s why I think it was all in my head,” she concluded, lost in thought. “It may also be just another ordinary dream,” she added.
It doesn’t seem like it. This time, I am the one left with the feeling that this is important. I must look into it. I’m going to play detective and do some digging. I learned incredible things today. What else could I discover if I go all the way back to the beginning of the world? Maybe I will even untangle this bloodline of Abdul and my ancestors!
